License suspension periods in Ohio increase with each OVI within the lookback period:
First offense: 1 year – 3 years; hardship: limited privileges after 15-day hard suspension; unlimited privileges available with ignition interlock (Annie's Law), which can halve the suspension
Second offense: 1 year – 7 years; hardship: privileges after 45-day hard suspension, interlock + restricted plates required
Third offense: 2 years – 12 years; hardship: privileges after 180-day hard suspension, interlock required
Fourth+ offense: 3 years – lifetime; hardship: court discretion, interlock
Refusing the chemical test
1-year administrative license suspension (ALS) for first refusal; limited privileges possible after 30 days. Refusal with a prior conviction within 20 years also elevates the criminal charge (doubled mandatory minimums).
