License suspension periods in California increase with each DUI within the lookback period:
First offense: 6 months (court) / 4 months (DMV APS) – 10 months (0.20+); hardship: IID for 6 months = full driving privileges (SB 1046), or restricted work/program license for 12 months without IID
Second offense: 2 years; hardship: IID for 12 months restores full driving privileges immediately (SB 1046)
Third offense: 3 years (revocation) – 3 years; hardship: IID for 24 months restores driving privileges (SB 1046)
Fourth+ offense: 4 years (revocation) – 4 years; hardship: IID for 36 months
Refusing the chemical test
1-year APS suspension for chemical-test refusal (2 years with one prior within 10 years, 3 years with two). No IID-restricted license option during a refusal suspension; refusal also adds mandatory jail as a sentencing enhancement.
Statute: Cal. Veh. Code §§ 13353, 23577
